Removing or eliminating highly enriched uranium (HEU) and separated plutonium (Pu). (Current global stockpile of HEU and separated Pu is estimated at about 2,000 tonnes, a large fraction of which is located in the U.S. and Russia. According to the IAEA's Illicit (Nuclear) Trafficking Database (ITDB), there have been 16 confirmed cases of unauthorised possession of HEU or Pu since 1993. Twenty-eight nations have plans to eliminate all current stocks of HEU by the end of 2013.)
Converting civilian commercial reactors and isotope production facilities to use low- enriched uranium (LEU) fuel and targets to reduce global reliance on HEU for research, energy and medical isotopes.
Deploying radiation detection capabilities, as well as providing training and sustainability support, at high-risk land, sea and air border crossings and strategic locations to increase the chances of detection of stolen nuclear material.
Formulating and implementing international and domestic nuclear non-proliferation strategies, policies and treaties to combat nuclear terrorism.
Advancing nuclear forensics capabilities to trace the origin of seized nuclear materials or devices, help identify smuggling networks, pinpoint vulnerabilities in security measures to ensure nuclear and other radioactive materials remain secured, and build and harmonise global nuclear forensics capabilities.
