THE Goa Institute of Management (GIM) was set up in 1993, largely thanks to the enthusiasm of Father R. D'Souza, S.J., former Director of the Xavier Labour Relations Institute (XLRI), Jamshedpur, and founder Director of the Xavier Institute of Management (XIM).
Goa University has recognised the GIM as a research centre for Ph.D. in Management, and the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has approved its full-time postgraduate programme. It has linkages with foreign universities such as Ohio University, the University of Antwerp and the Fachhochshule Ingolstadt in Germany.
The institute strengthens its infrastructure continuously. It subscribes to electronic databases, which enable students and the faculty to access current management literature and information from networked rooms and offices. The library has a collection of over 8,000 books on management, and subscribes to a large number of Indian and foreign journals.
The fully residential programme requires all students to live on campus, and students work in groups. The hostel accommodation compares favourably with that provided by most postgraduate institutes of management.
The classrooms have audio-visual equipment to help presentations. Video recording and playback of classroom presentations are done to facilitate learning. Classrooms are connected with a local area network that provides students easy access to the institute's database and to the Internet through a 1 MBPS leased line.
The GIM boasts a fairly large full-time faculty; all the teachers are distinguished in their respective fields. Most of the teachers have years of industrial experience. Several corporate managers visit as adjunct and guest faculty.
A specially designed part-time three-year MBA programme is offered on weekends to meet the needs of working executives. The future looks promising for the GIM, which continues to affirm its commitment to quality management education and building managerial competence, says its new Director, A.H. Kalro.
