Dr. Anjana Visvanathan, consultant ENT surgeon, performed the operation on a 26-year-old patient from Austria who was suffering from nerve deafness since birth.
The purpose of the surgical procedure is to implant the internal components of the sound bridge. The surgery takes about two hours. Most patients resume their normal activity within a few days, said Dr. Aruna Visvanathan, a surgeon at the hospital. The vibrant sound bridge is designed to deal with mild to severe sensorineural hearing loss, she explained.
Vikram ENT Hospital and Research Institute was established in 1972 by Dr. P.G. Visvanathan, who has used gold and titanium prosthesis to replace the bones of hearing. Dr. Aruna Visvanathan said, In the past, even multiple operations have failed to restore satisfactory hearing. Today, with titanium middle-ear implant or sound bridge, near-normal hearing can be restored. The hospital has introduced several other forms of treatment and surgical procedures. We have an innovative one-day treatment programme for children with tonsil problem, she said. If tonsilitis is left untreated, it can cause ear infection and might need surgical intervention later, she said. We use a KTP laser coblator in this treatment. It can even reduce wheezing and frequent cold, she added. Vikram ENT Hospital specialises in performing cochlear implants with a minimally invasive technique to restore hearing even in profoundly deaf children. The hospital has speech therapists to help these children. The hospital has introduced balloon sinuplasty for treating sinusitis. With balloon sinuplasty and microdebrider, we can provide non-invasive and long-standing cures for sinus diseases and headaches, she said.
