COIMBATORE has established itself as a leading centre in health care, next only to Chennai in Tamil Nadu. It has several reputed hospitals providing specialised treatment. Besides multi-speciality hospitals, it has super-speciality hospitals for ear, nose and throat; eye care; cadaver kidney transplant; assisted reproduction and endoscopy. Coimbatore is also becoming an important centre for medical transcription and consultation on clinical research.

Vikram ENT Hospital and Research Institute, which has 36 years of surgical experience and uses cutting-edge technology, has introduced vibrant sound bridge, an advanced surgical procedure for curing nerve deafness. Dr. Anjana Visvanathan, consultant ENT surgeon, performed the operation on a 26-year-old patient from Austria who was suffering from nerve deafness since birth.

The purpose of the surgical procedure is to implant the internal components of the sound bridge. The surgery takes about two hours. Most patients resume their normal activity within a few days, said Dr. Aruna Visvanathan, a surgeon at the hospital. The vibrant sound bridge is designed to deal with mild to severe sensorineural hearing loss, she explained.

Vikram ENT Hospital and Research Institute was established in 1972 by Dr. P.G. Visvanathan, who has used gold and titanium prosthesis to replace the bones of hearing. Dr. Aruna Visvanathan said, In the past, even multiple operations have failed to restore satisfactory hearing. Today, with titanium middle-ear implant or sound bridge, near-normal hearing can be restored. The hospital has introduced several other forms of treatment and surgical procedures. We have an innovative one-day treatment programme for children with tonsil problem, she said. If tonsilitis is left untreated, it can cause ear infection and might need surgical intervention later, she said. We use a KTP laser coblator in this treatment. It can even reduce wheezing and frequent cold, she added. Vikram ENT Hospital specialises in performing cochlear implants with a minimally invasive technique to restore hearing even in profoundly deaf children. The hospital has speech therapists to help these children. The hospital has introduced balloon sinuplasty for treating sinusitis. With balloon sinuplasty and microdebrider, we can provide non-invasive and long-standing cures for sinus diseases and headaches, she said.

Consortium Clinical Research Private Limited is a knowledge process outsourcing organisation with its corporate office in Coimbatore. While its academic wing trains freshers and professionals in clinical research methodologies, its commercial arm provides project management and consultation for activities related to clinical trials. The organisation caters to the needs of pharmaceutical companies, hospitals and other medical institutions.

AnandaPadmanabhan, director, Consortium Clinical Research, explained that clinical research formed a group of different experiments done on human beings. These tests constituted the last stage of the drug discovery process.

The superbly maintained PSG Super Speciality Hospitals is an 810-bed multi-speciality hospital, resting on a foundation of academics and charity. It is a teaching hospital. It offers a broad range of tertiary care services with a modern catheterisation laboratory.

We have set up a Picture Archiving and Communication System by which we are able to store all our images X-rays and laparoscopic pictures, said Dr. Vimal Kumar Govindan, medical director, PSG Super Speciality Hospitals.
