THE Government of India introduced the Energy Conservation Act (EC Act) in August 2001. The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) was created as a statutory body to implement the Act. It began functioning in March 2002, implementing various programme areas identified under the E.C. Act.

The BEE formulated an Action Plan in consultation with all stakeholders during the early stages of the Tenth Plan. Released by the Prime Minister on August 23, 2002, it serves as a road map for the BEE to chart out its activities. Its major activities are:

Indian Industry Programme for Energy Conservation;

Demand Side Management;Standards & Labelling;

Energy Efficiency in Buildings and Establishment;

Energy Conservation Building Code;Professional Certification and Accreditation;Manuals and Codes;Energy Efficiency Policy Research Programme;

Energy Efficiency and Conservation in School Education;
