THE campus of T. Subbarami Reddy & T. Balarama Krishna Degree College & PG Centre gives the appearance of a green zone amidst a concrete jungle. T. Balarama Krishna, the institutions founder and promoter, fondly calls it the second Santiniketan of India. It is set on four acres in the Gajuwaka industrial suburb of Visakhapatnam, and the salubrious setting provides the perfect ambience for higher learning. Balarama Krishna modelled the campus on the lines of Rabindranath Tagores Visva Bharati.

Balarama Krishna started a junior (plus two) college in 1990. The degree and postgraduate colleges were incorporated in 1994. The junior college, for the Intermediate course, has four streams: MPC (mathematics, physics and chemistry), BiPC (biology, physics and chemistry), CEC (civics, economics and commerce) and MEC (mathematics, economics and commerce).

At the degree level, apart from the traditional streams, the college offers over 10 B.Sc. programmes with various innovative combinations. The college offers B.Com (computers) and bachelor of business management (BBM) degrees. The PG centre offers M.Sc. degrees in biochemistry, zoology, biotechnology, botany, microbiology, analytical chemistry, physics and organic chemistry. From this year, it will also offer masters programmes in human resource management (MHRM) and English.

As at Visva Bharati, classes are at times held in the shade of trees. However, that does not undermine our concern for modernity and scientific modes of teaching. We have a state-of-the-art laboratory for each department and a well-stocked library. We have a fully equipped language lab, said Balarama Krishna.

The college has about 2,200 students, the majority of whom come from Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Orissa, West Bengal, Assam, Manipur, Nagaland and Uttar Pradesh. There are a few students from Nepal. The hostels can house over 1,200 students and there is a gym. Balarama Krishna said: I intend to make it a world-class institution that will churn out leaders and entrepreneurs. Holistic development of students is our motto. Most importantly, study at this institution should be affordable to all.

Sri Prakash Educational Society was established in August 1977 to promote English medium education in the backward areas of East Godavari and Visakhapatnam districts. It offers education from the playschool to the postgraduate level. Its schools and colleges, which are located in Visakhapatnam, Payakaraopeta, Tuni and Peddapuram, have about 8,000 students.
