COIMBATORE has many institutions of higher learning, including State universities such as Bharathiar University and Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, private deemed-to-be universities such as Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham University, Karunya University, and Karpagam University, and government and private medical colleges.

Bharathiar University has 105 affiliated colleges, two lakh students and 5,000 teachers. It has 40 university departments ranging from biotechnology, information technology, physical education, linguistics, and medical physics. A new department in Textiles and Apparel Design is being started this year. We are planning to start M.Sc. courses in Earth Sciences, Atmospheric Sciences and Meteorology next year, said C. Swaminathan, Vice-Chancellor. One-year postgraduate diploma courses in French and German, to be organised by the Department of English and Foreign Languages, are on the anvil.

The university trains students taking the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examinations and does not charge for it.

Anna University of Technology, Coimbatore, established four years ago, offers 41 undergraduate and 58 postgraduate programmes in its affiliated colleges. Vice-Chancellor K. Karunakaran said that in order to improve the quality and quantity, he had formulated a research board with 35 members belonging to various technological institutions and industry.

We have zero unemployment among our graduates, said P. Murugesa Boopathi, Vice-Chancellor, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), Coimbatore. In the past five years, 2,985 students who graduated in agriculture, forestry and horticulture, food processing engineering, agribusiness management, energy and environmental engineering and agricultural information technology got placements.

The university is starting a degree course in sericulture this year. Seventeen years after its genesis as a school of engineering, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham University is all set to branch out in new directions. It has 15,000 students in its five campuses at Coimbatore, Kochi, Amritapuri (in Karunagapalli, Kerala), Bangalore and Mysore. Courses in engineering, medicine, dentistry, nursing, arts and science, journalism, and ayurveda are offered at the undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels here. It has plans to start a school of law, a school of leadership and programmes in the study of languages, political science, economics and philosophy, and a B.Tech in Physical Sciences.

C. Parameswaran, director, corporate and international relations, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, said this year the university would start PG diploma courses in wind power development and wind resource assessment, which would be funded by the Union government. Students will be paid a stipend of Rs.5,000 a month and guaranteed a placement upon completion of the courses.

The Park College of Engineering and Technology, Coimbatore, also plans to start a course in wind energy. It offers a B.E. in Environmental Engineering, which it began in 2009. The group has 15 institutions, including three engineering colleges, two business schools, a maritime academy, an arts college, a teachers' training institute, a polytechnic and schools in Coimbatore, Tiruppur and Chennai. The Park Global Schools of Business Excellence in Coimbatore and Chennai offer five management programmes.

Karunya University, Coimbatore, will be celebrating its silver jubilee in August, according to Paul P. Appasamy, Vice-Chancellor. Founded by D.G.S. Dhinakaran in 1986, the university offers numerous engineering courses at the undergraduate and postgraduate level, PG diploma courses in VLSI, advanced manufacturing technology, environmental management, and so on.

The KPR Institute of Engineering and Technology, and KPR School of Business, established three years ago in Coimbatore, have made a name for themselves. The institute offers B.E. in mechanical, electrical and electronics, electronics and communication, civil, electrical and computer science engineering.
