Frontline has done a great service by drawing attention to the criticisms against Western academics in recent years ("Virtual assaults," January 28). However, the brief article lacks balance and nuance because it unreservedly paints all the academics as helpless victims, and identifies all their critics as synonymous with "the Hindu Right in Indian politics."Neither of these portraits is accurate. There are many Western academics who have been wrongly targeted. A case in point is Fr. Francis X. Clooney, a serious, sincere and honest academic whose integrity and scholarship are unquestionable. The attack on him was not only misguided but also deplorable. He deserves an apology from those who suspected his motive and work. His contribution to make Hindu theology accessible and understandable to the West is immense and his approach has consistently been respectful as well as objective.
Attempts to correct misperceptions and misrepresentations of Hinduism are increasingly being dismissed and derided in the West as coming from "Hindutva" people, or those with a political agenda.
