The Hindu Centre for Politics and Public Policy has been ranked 33rd in the “Top Think Tanks in China, India, Japan, and the Republic of Korea” category by the 2018 Global Go To Think Tank Index Report, published by the Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program, The Lauder Institute, University of Pennsylvania.

According to the Report, released earlier this month, the largest number of think tanks are in the United States (1,871), followed by India (509) and China (507). Japan and South Korea have 128 and 60 respectively.

The ranking was based on several parameters, including quality and reputation of research and analysis produced; academic performance and reputation; quality, number, and reach of publications; impact of research on policy makers; a demonstrated commitment to producing independent research and analysis; level, diversity, and stability of funding; media reputation; and website and digital presence.

The Hindu Centre for Politics and Public Policy, a division of The Hindu Group, was inaugurated by the then President of India, Pranab Mukherjee, on January 31, 2013, to promote research, dialogue and discussion to enable the creation of informed public opinion on key issues facing India and to safeguard, strengthen and nourish parliamentary democracy and pluralism. The research supported by The Hindu Centre covers a variety of themes of importance to India.

The Hindu Centre has so far supported 31 public policy scholars. The most recent research reports supported by The Hindu Centre were on farmer producer companies in Maharashtra, strengthening India’s research protocols for assistive aids for the disabled, political dynasties among Muslim legislators of Uttar Pradesh, analysing the Indian state’s policy response to the Rohingya refugee crisis, pain and the health of women in rural Bihar, and a comparison between cash and in-kind transfers in Delhi. Previous research studies include those on the role of the Speaker in Parliament, post office banks, bonded labour, smart cities, and comparison of school textbooks in Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh.

The Hindu Centre also carries detailed long-form analytical articles, essays and commentaries on current issues, and has hosted consultations, round tables, public discussions and special lectures on key governance and policy issues featuring distinguished speakers.
