The District Magistrate (D.M.) of Alipurduar in West Bengal, Nikhil Nirmal, was caught on camera beating up a man in a police station allegedly for making lewd comments about his wife on social media. Nirmal and his wife were seen thrashing the youth, Binod Kumar Sarkar, inside the police station even as he begged for mercy. The lady was even heard asking one of the police personnel to fetch a baton to beat the man, but one of the policemen appeared to be against the idea. The couple kept asking the man, “At whose behest did you put up the post?”
Nirmal was also heard threatening the man, “Nobody can speak against me in my district…. If I can put you in jail in half an hour, I can kill you right in your home,” he was heard saying. The punishment continued until a policeman intervened. The incident sparked condemnation in civil society and political circles alike.
Surjya Kanta Mishra, Polit Bureau member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and West Bengal State secretary, said on social media: “District magistrate Alipurduar with wife taking law into his (sic) own hands inside the Falakata Police Station against a person repeatedly begging mercy for some indecent comment posted in his Facebook on DM’s wife, speaks of law and order situation in West Bengal under TMC (Trinamool rule). We demand that these culprits in the topmost level of the district, civil and police administration be suspended and taken to higher police custody immediately.”
According to sources in Nabanna, the State secretariat, Nirmal was asked to go on leave following the incident.
